Today is awesome, because today is the day that we decided to launch our new card series, #CardsForAllies. When Alicia and I first told our friends and family that we realized we were more than friends, we got a whole lot of mixed reactions - neither of us had ever been in a same-sex relationship, and had never identified as anything other than "straight" before. We were raised in totally different places, and a couple of people in our lives think that there is something so fundamentally wrong with us that they no longer speak to us. That being said, we had it pretty easy compared to a lot of other people, including some of our friends and family, and we're very lucky to live in one of the most accepting cities in the world.
When we started making cards, it was always on our mind that we wanted them to be inclusive. Our wedding cards are all made to be used for any type of wedding, we tend to avoid gender specific colours on new baby cards, and most our anniversary/valentines are designed to be used by any gender, for any gender, or really any variation of gender queer. When we got married in Ontario, it still wasn’t legal in most states, and we knew we were never going to be able to move to Alicia’s home state of Florida, since we wouldn’t be legally recognized, and I wouldn’t able to get my residence. So…a lot's changed. We can’t even believe how much has changed in 2 short years - we can move almost anywhere in the US now (at least anywhere we would want to move to!)
We started designing these cards a few months ago, and we thought there was no way we’d have them ready for the National Stationery Show, since we had so much else to do, and needed to expand our current lines. Last week, we were motivated by two things: Alicia's brother was officially recognized by the government by his true gender (woohoo!), and uh, we found out we had a couple more days before our catalogue absolutely needed to go to press! We hit a creative stride and we're so excited we got them done, because we think the world is ready to have cards like this in the mainstream! However, we need your help! We’d love it if these cards could be found by anyone who needs one - there are 12 in total, and hopefully there's something for everyone in there. (And we'll be adding more!)
While we'd love it if everyone shared for the pure joy of it, there is an incentive! We're running a contest on our Instagram
right now, if you share any of our #CardsForAllies photos, tag them with #CardsForAllies and #iHeartSLPC (you can add @seaandlake to the description if you'd like to help people find the cards more easily!), you'll be entered to win the following prize from our Etsy Shop, all of your choice!
- One Mug
- Two 8x10 Art Prints
- 10 Cards
- 8 Buttons or Magnets
- 1 Notepad
- 2 sets of Gift Tags
That’s over $130 worth of awesome stuff you can hoard for yourself, or generously gift to loved ones :) Please share as many times as you’d like, your chances go up with each one. We’ll be sharing a couple of new images every day for the next 5 days, so you can share as many times as you'd like, without being TOO repetitive! We’ve also created a board on Pinterest
, and we’d love it if you’d share them there as well.
One of the things we're certain about, is that our experience and the experiences of those close to us do not sum up what it means to be part of the LGBTQ community. This is a start - but we're so excited to talk to more people in our community (across the world!) to expand on what's available. We're going to be doing a blog series soon, with stories shared by anyone going through something major in their life that felt like an ally really helped them through it. All of that being said, you may notice that not all of these cards were created with only LGBTQ recipients in mind - there are a few that are made for ANY type of ally, because after all, we're all human, we all go through life events that require support, and some of these just ended up that way because guess what? We're not that different. In our situation, we just love each other a whole lot more than we've ever loved anyone else before.
Thank you so much for your support, and we hope these cards fall into the hands of those that might need a little extra support during a difficult time, or into the hands of someone that couldn't be more excited to declare their true selves and you just need a great congrats card! All cards are now available on our Etsy
